Podcast Branding Secrets

podcast-branding

Podcast branding is a relatively new invention (likely no older than 5 or 7 years!). Podcasters all too often dive into copying what their favourite podcast does – which unfortunately often leads to bad results. I am often asked what are the three most important rules not to break when it comes to podcast branding. So here they are.

Never use copyrighted material – even if you are very tempted to do so!

If you decide to use any copyrighted material you absolutely have to make sure you have publisher’s permission to do so. The process isn’t easy and in all cases I worked on I have not once seen this to be a breeze. Simply don’t risk it. It is not just about the fact that you may get caught. Your listeners are not stupid and may simply think it is unprofessional to use unlicensed material. Simply steer clear – it is not worth it all together.

Call to action goes at the end

Imagine we have just met. I come up to you and say – “Hi, I am Izabela. Could you please like my Facebook page?” Right… that’s going to happen hmm?

Don’t overdo it

Whilst having professionally produced audio elements is definitely making you sound the part, inserting too many can simply upset your listeners. Think of the overall length of your podcast and apply the 5-10% rule. If your podcast is usually 30 mins long – audio elements shouldn’t exceed 1.5 – 3 minutes.
