The Webby Awards 2017 has introduced a whole category for podcasts and digital audio. Indicating positive growth of the podcasting medium.
What is a Webby Award?
A Webby Award is an award for excellence on the Internet. The Webbys have been presented annually by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences since 1996.
Some of the previous award winners include international celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.
The Growth of Podcasting in 2017
A whole category dedicated to podcasts in the Webby Awards 2017 is tremendous news for the medium. It is a vast improvement on the Webby Awards 2016 which had one single “Best Podcast” award up for grabs. Roman Mars’ 99% Invisible podcast was the winner and among the other Webby winners of 2016.
2 Podcasts from the UK Recognised in the Webbys
You’ll find 75 podcasts nominated for a Webby Award in 2017 and of these podcasts 2 originate from the UK.
- Jamie Oliver x Amazon Echo / Podcasts & Digital Audio / Lifestyle
- Witness – BBC World Service / Podcasts & Digital Audio / Recaps
The majority of the 75 award nominated podcasts are created in the US which therefore remains the global powerhouse of podcast production.
Webby Awards Timeline
Public voting is open until 20th April 2017 and the winner announcements will happen on 25th April 2017 followed by a glitzy awards ceremony in May.
