How Many Podcast Audio Branding Elements Do I Need?

It is very easy to get overwhelmed with the whole "branding" trend. So how much audio is enough and when you can overdo it?

When it comes to branding it really is easy to get overwhelmed. Often podcasters think that the more the better and more professional. But is that really true? Should you dump a ton of short jingles in between your content? You need to work out how can you maintain consistency, tact and sanity?

How Many Elements Do I Need?

How many audio elements to have and how long should they be? The good news is that it is a relatively easy thing to work out. At the very minimum you should consider investing in a decent podcast intro. I have heard that we make judgements in less than 30 seconds. So you have just that amount of time to convince somebody that your podcast is worth listening to. Your podcast intro is the absolute key!

Step up the Game

If you would like to spice things up (and they say that audio is the spice of life?) you could look at adding an outro. So the audio element at the end of your podcast. This gives you the opportunity to include relevant call to action. Never and I mean ever include a call to action at the start of your podcast. It is a waste of space and waste of time for your listener. Make sure to maintain your podcast branding consistency. Use the same voice artist and branding music for both intro and outro. If your podcast is fairly long (say 45 minutes or more) you may also want to invest in some “jingle breaks”. They can simply add entertainment value as well as break up your content into smaller chunks . A little bit like a TV ad – giving you the opportunity to run to the loo or in this case for listener to pause and return when they have more time and not loose the context.

How Long Should My Audio Branding Be?

So how long should your branding be? Think of the overall length of your podcast and apply the 5% – 10% rule. If your podcast episodes are approximately 30 minutes long – audio elements shouldn’t exceed 1.5 – 3 minutes. Any more will be a huge overkill. Also make sure to create elements that match your bran’s feel and target audience. Make sure that there is a consistency between all produced elements. Using one or two voices as your chosen branding voices is also a good choice.
